Functional modular kit turns hundreds of unused storefronts into multi-use spaces
Building spaces that seamlessly change use, from designer fashion boutique to cooking classroom, could soon be a reality thanks to a simple set of versatile furnishing and amenities.
The miLES Storefront Transformer, designed by Architecture Commons, is a set of modular furniture that creators are hoping will transform the 200+ vacant shop fronts in Manhattan’s Lower East Side.
There are a growing number of vacant storefronts in every major city that are likely to remain unused because of increasing rent prices. miLES aims to accommodate empty spaces on a short-term basis to lower the entry barrier for creative, entrepreneurial and civic projects, with the potential of converting these into longer-term sustainable uses.
